Review the World: Speedrunners

Speedrunners
Developed by: DoubleDutch Games and tinyBuild Games
Genre: Speedster Superheroes
Mechanics Keywords: Sidescroller, Racing, Competitive

Subjective Length: 5-15 minutes per match. Party play game.

Overall: 8/10 If you have a platform that will play this, it is well worth buying.
Mash up Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario Kart, and the tight, intuitive web-swinging we keep wishing to see in every Spiderman game, and you'll have something a lot like Speedrunners. Then layer in striking visuals and music that would work well in the Incredibles, and you'll have the superhero theme down as well. This game is just plain fun. This is a game about gaining a lead and using items to stack the race to your advantage. With a minimum of individual mechanics, there is exactly as much strategy as your brain can physically process at the speed this game is going.

The thing that most impresses me in this game is the mechanic of how players are knocked out of the race. A player dies when they fall off the back of the screen. You may remember this as the MOST ANNOYING THING THERE WAS back when it was part of Sonic 2. Not only is this a good game, it's a good game that found a way to resurrect old mechanics in a way that turned frustration into gaming gold.

The only complaint I can even think of is that I wish there were more story levels. Really, there's plenty of story levels for what the game is trying to be; but this game is so addictive you'll probably chew through those like they're a bag of potato chips. I know I did.
